Locals MPs to debate Brexit at the University of Gloucestershire
An event named ‘The Debate’ comes to the University of Gloucestershire at Park Campus on the 13th of February, where local MPs will come together to discuss the local area and big topics such as Brexit with students. The question time style Q&A event aims to give students and young people a voice in their local community on important issues affecting them locally and nationally.
How much do young people really know about Brexit? With the political atmosphere surrounding Brexit getting more and more heated everyday many are asking for the young people of the UK whose future this will affect the most for their opinions. But the key issue remains that young people don’t feel like they know enough about Brexit to really be involved in the national conversation.
For example, what exactly does a hard Brexit really mean? Many students still feel they have no idea.
When asked about the issue Kirsty Green, 20, Gloucester place, a photography student at the university said, “I’ve never really understood Brexit and I don’t really know how it will affect me and my future.” This is an extremely common issue for students around the UK right now.
Creative writing student Lisa Stockwell, 20, St Pauls Road North, adds “basically all I really understand is the big gist of where we are, I don’t understand any of the details of what’s really going on.”
Member of the Student's Union Megan Williams, 19, Marle Hill Parade said the event “is a chance for students to ask questions about their community” and “create a safe space” to learn and get involved in politics. The hope is that the event will also spark a new enthusiasm in students to want to discuss Brexit, Megan adds how many students “just switch off” when it comes to heavy topics like Brexit. When asked how to event aim to tackle this Megan said “being able to ask questions face to face will make things easier to understand.”
