Beating Sadness With Habits
I’ve mastered my bounce back speed to approximately... one and a half hours maybe. No biggie. Maybe that sounds like a lot to you. But for me there’s no more allowing sadness and small things, or even big things consume my days and nights. By now I know myself, really well. That’s a least one thing I’ve achieved, I never felt like I had to go anywhere, travel Asia or Europe to figure out who I am.
I really get me. It may sound small. But it’s actually really key.
I know my likes, my dislikes, my habits and my triggers. And like a wise friend once told me, you can’t always control your first thought, but you can always control your second.
The truth is, sometimes I wake up sad. But it’s not all sad because by now I would say I’m extremely experience in waking up heavy but stepping back as choosing to have a good (at least goodish) day.
Unfortunately I can’t give you a magic formula that’s going to work for you, but I hope that if I tell you some of what works for me, it will help you find what works for you. The first step is actually wanting to beat the sadness. You have to wake up and decide that you really want today to be a good day and you can work to make that happen. Don’t allow yourself to feel defeated, everyday there’s hope and opportunity for today to be better than yesterday.
So here’s what works for me:
1) MUSIC. I know so simple but I honestly set out parts of my day to sit and blast Jhene Aiko (oblivion bangs on a bad day) Mac Miller and Kiana Lede, it creates a space for me to just be. Surrounded by art I love.
2) Podcasts. Cleaning and listening to the right podcast can honestly change your day I promise.
3) FACEMASKS. Girls I know I don’t really need to say any more.
4) Call a friend. A good friend. Preferably someone you instantly click with and trust. No judgements. Sometimes you just need to vent. This has now saved me hundreds of times.
5) Decide it’s absolutely okay that tonight you’ll just have a bath, add some lavender essential oils, get your favourite snacks, watch your favourite show and hop into bed early. Switch your phone on do not disturb, you don’t have to do anything tonight it can wait until tomorrow.
Create a routine that works and you can fall back on.
And no matter how bad it feels, a bad day can only last 24 hours. That’s the rules, no matter how bad it was, today will end and you can try again tomorrow.
